Yes, Hansuru and I finally went to see RIZE. Did no one tell me it was out? Bitches.
Anyway, it was nice to see these South Central kids have a fun, etc. However captivating and exciting it was to see these kids dancing all crazy (I want Sou to dance like the 'Lil' Mamas' in the movie!), I agree with some critics that Mr. LaChapelle (not Dave Chappelle) doesn't really go behind the scenes enough, in giving us a real look at these people's everyday realities. I would probably give a shit more about the other characters if I saw how shitty their day-to-day realities were, or how their mom was a crack whore and their dad is in jail or something.
Maybe if the editing had been more coherent it would have been better. I didn't like how preachy the kids were getting about how the dancing was like their ghetto ballet, etc., although I believe them. But I don't need to be preached at. Shut up and dance, suckas!
However, I would recommend this movie just to watch these clowns dance. It's pretty entertaining and totally CLAZY.
Naturally, you will exit the movie having wild delusions of being able to clown dance. Hansel and I clowndanced all the way home, *sort* of. I had cowboy boots on though.
